Hurt & Routledge Gain CBEs in Queen's Honours

Actors John Hurt and Patricia Routledge are amongst the theatre names singled out for their services to the arts as part of the annual Queen's Birthday Honours list, announced this past weekend.

Hurt, aged 64, is appointed a CBE. He has most recently been seen in the West End in Afterplay (pictured) Krapp's Last Tape. Hurt is best known internationally for his long-running film career in which his credits include Alien, Little Malcolm, The Elephant Man, 1984, White Mischief, The Field, Crime and Punishment, Rob Roy and Love and Death on Long Island.

Also receiving a CBE, Routledge, 75, is another veteran stage actor, who has regularly appeared in productions for the National and the RSC as well as in the West End. She’s most recently been seen on stage at Chichester Festival in Wild Orchids and The Importance of Being Earnest, which also transferred to the West End. She’s best known to TV fans as Hyacinth Bucket in the long-running sitcom Keeping Up Appearances.

Elsewhere in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, Jamaican-born opera singer Willard White is knighted; poets turned playwrights Roger McGough and Pam Ayres are appointed CBE and MBE respectively; children’s playwright David Wood and stage designer Alison Chitty both get OBEs; and MP Gerald Kaufman, chairman of the culture, media and sport select committee, receives a knighthood.
