Ringwald Confirms as West End's New Sally, 2 Jun

As previously tipped (See News, 5 May 2004), former Hollywood “Brat Packer” Molly Ringwald (pictured) will make her West End debut next month when she takes over from Alyson Hannigan in the stage adaptation of When Harry Met Sally, which has now extended until 4 September 2004 at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Hannigan and her co-star Luke Perry as well as other cast members will finish at the end of their contracts on 29 May 2004 (See News, 8 Jan 2004). Ringwald’s Sally and her new Harry, who has not yet been announced, will start performances from 2 June, with a new press night on 15 June.

Ringwald is best-remembered as one of the 1980s “Brat Pack” of stars, appearing in hit teenage films like The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles. Her other film credits include Tempest, Some Folks Call It a Slingblade, Office Killer, The Pick-Up Artist, Fresh Horses and Betsy’s Wedding. On stage, she’s been seen in Cabaret, Enchanted April and Tick Tick Boom in New York, and How I Learned to Drive in Los Angeles.

Rob Reiner's 1989 film of When Harry Met Sally starred Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as one-time college classmates who move to New York and, over many years, hate each other, become friends and, against their own better judgments, eventually fall in love. Playwright Marcy Kahan adapted the original Nora Ephron screenplay for this premiere stage production.

In addition to Perry and Hannigan in the title roles, the current cast also features Kevin Collins, Sharon Small, Jake Broder, Elizabeth Jasicki and Richard Teverson. When Harry Met Sally is directed by Loveday Ingram and designed by Ultz, with music by British jazz musicians Jamie and Ben Cullum.
