The Cemetery Club
The Cemetery Club
Woodward & Wife Dotrice Reunite in Cemetery Club
Date: 18 August 2003

British screen star Edward Woodward and his actress wife Michele Dotrice will appear on stage together in a new touring production of Ivan Menchell's The Cemetery Club. The comedy opens at Lincoln's Theatre Royal on 1 September 2003 before continuing, until 8 November, to eight further venues.

Woodward is best known internationally for his hit American TV series The Equalizer, while his many other film and television roles include Callan, The Wicker Man, La Femme Nikita, The Professionals and Common as Muck. The actor made his stage debut in 1955 and went on to seasons with the RSC and the National as well as appearances both in the West End and on Broadway before moving primarily into screen work.

After a 15-year absence, Woodward returned to the stage last year to take the title role in Goodbye Gilbert Harding on tour. Prior to that, his last major theatrical role was in 1987, starring in A Dead Secret opposite his wife, Dotrice, who is also a familiar television face from Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. The couple are joined in The Cemetery Club cast by Shirley Anne Field (Alfie and My Beautiful Laundrette on screen and, earlier this year on stage, My Sainted Aunt) and Anne Charleston (Neighbours).

The Cemetery Club tells the story of how one man changed the lives of three golden girl widows who meet each year at their husbands' gravesides. The play had a Broadway run in 1990 and, three years later, was made into a Hollywood film starring Olympia Dukakis, Ellen Burstyn, Diane Ladd and Danny Aiello.

The new UK production is directed by Chris Colby and designed by Alan Miller Bunford, with lighting by Graham McLusky. Following Lincoln, it calls at Darlington, Poole, Guildford, Bromley, Coventry, Southend, Wolverhampton and Eastbourne.
