Jerry Springer Storms into the Cambridge, 14 OctDate: 4 July 2003
Following its sell out season at the National Theatre, Jerry Springer - The Opera has announced its anticipated transfer (see The Goss, 19 Jun 2003) to the Cambridge Theatre on 14 October 2003.
Along with the transfer comes the news of a scheme to give young people cheaper seats, as is common practice at the National Theatre. Those under 25 will be able to benefit from top-price seats for just £25, and to meet demand 35,000 tickets will be released for this target audience. There will also be a limited number of stalls seats priced at £25 available on the day of performance with no restrictions.
Conceived and created by writer and director Stewart Lee and composer Richard Thomas, Jerry Springer - The Opera started life in May 2001 at a ‘scratch’ development night for new work at BAC and quickly took on cult status. It returned there for a three-week sell-out season last February which attracted myriad celebrities and theatrical powers-that-be - including the NT's artistic director Nicholas Hytner, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cameron Mackintosh, Rocky Horror's Richard O'Brien and various other producers.
In the musical Springer suffers the worst day of his career, during which he's taken from his studio to both heaven and hell, confronting some of his bizarre guests, including a Chick with a Dick and a diaper-wearing baritone, along the way. Michael Brandon (of Dempsey and Mackepeace fame) takes the title role, the 36-strong cast also includes David Bedella, Valda Aviks, Alison Jiear and Andrew Bevis.
Jerry Springer - The Opera is directed by co-creator Lee and designed by Crouch, with costumes by Leah Archer, lighting by Rick Fisher, choreography by Jenny Arnold, orchestrations by Martin Koch, musical supervision by Martin Lowe and sound by Mike Walker. Its run at the National ends on 30 September.
Currently playing at the Cambridge Theatre until 16 August 2003 is Our House, the Olivier Award-winning musical inspired by the greatest hits of Madness, which posted closing notices in London ahead of an anticipated regional tour in early 2004. The booking period for Jerry Springer - The Opera at the Cambridge is until March 2004.
