S Club's Jon Takes Lead in West End Les MiserablesDate: 3 June 2003
S Club's Jon Lee will join the London cast of Les Miserables. From 23 July 2003, the pop star will play Marius in the long-running musical at the West End's Palace Theatre.
For the past four years, Lee has been a member of the seven-strong pop sensation, which spawned its own US-based television show in addition to concerts, videos and hit chart singles like "Reach", "In a Million", "Don't Stop Movin'", "Have You Ever" and "Bring It All Back". The group officially disbanded at the end of May 2003, having just released its farewell single, "Say Goodbye", with their greatest hits compilation album out this month.
Although Lee has previously starred in the West End - taking the title role in Oliver! at the age of 12 - the 21-year-old will now make his adult stage debut in Les Mis. In addition to S Club spin-offs, his television acting credits include Mill on the Floss and EastEnders. Lee trained at London's Sylvia Young Theatre School.
Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Mis has been seen worldwide by over 50 million people in more than 38 countries and in 21 languages. It's now in its 18th year in the West End. Originally adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the musical is written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg. It's produced by Cameron Mackintosh.
