Bath Hit Shakespeare's R&J Transfers to Arts, 8 Sep

Date: 23 May 2003

As previously tipped (See The Goss, 4 Mar 2003), Shakespeare's R & J, a modern spin-off of Romeo and Juliet from the New York-based company The Splinter Group, will transfer to the West End this autumn. It opens for a limited season at the Arts Theatre on 8 September 2003, following previews from 3 September.

In Shakespeare's R & J (pictured), four schoolboys at a rigidly strict Catholic boys' school stumble across a forbidden copy of Shakespeare's text and act it out in secret, discovering a world of beauty and excitement and stirring adolescent sexual passions in a repressed environment.

Adapted and directed by American Joe Calarco, the play ran for 18 months Off-Broadway, where it won a Lucille Lortel award. It received its UK premiere in March 2003 at the fifth annual Bath Shakespeare Festival at the Theatre Royal in Bath (See News, 3 Mar 2003).

The West End season of Shakespeare's R & J is presented by The Splinter Group, Theatre Royal Bath Productions and Edward Snape for Fiery Angel.

Now at the Arts Theatre, Justin Butcher's daily-updated political satire The Madness of George Dubya is currently booking up to 28 June 2003.
