Scarborough Makes Waves & New Comedy PremieresDate: 25 April 2003
Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre opens its spring/summer season tonight (25 April 2003) with Stephen Clark's Making Waves, which is followed by the Orange Tree co-production of Feydeau farce The Game Hunter and the world premieres of two new comedies, Lesley Bruce's Bedtime Stories and Sugar Daddies, the 64th play from the pen of Alan Ayckbourn.
Making Waves is the story of a volunteer lifeboat man Mike, the local hero. When his eldest son Sam comes back home after five years in New York, things are looking up, but in fact Mike's trouble is just beginning. The production - which stars Geoff Lesley and Charlie Hardwick and is directed by Daniel Slater - runs from 25 April to 24 May 2003.
The Game Hunter, currently running to 24 May at the Orange Tree in Richmond, comes to Scarborough from 29 May to 12 July 2003. Richard Cottrell's new translation of Feydeau's classic French farce weaves together the stories of a cheating husband, a passionate wife and a manipulative friend as they get caught up in a tangled web of lies. Feydeau wrote over 40 plays, including Hotel Paradiso and A Flea in Her Ear. The production is directed by Orange Tree artistic director Sam Walters and designed by Pip Leckenby.
Laurie Sansom - whose West Yorkshire Playhouse production of JB Priestley's Dangerous Corner, starring Dervla Kirwan and Rupert Penry-Jones, transferred to the West End in 2001 - directs the world premiere of Bedtime Stories. Lesley's Bruce's comedy promises to be a quirky mixture of bizarre events and ten haunting songs about the moon. It plays, in repertory with The Game Hunter, from the 5 June to 12 July 2003.
Later in the summer, prolific playwright and SJT artistic director Alan Ayckbourn will present the world premiere of his 64th play, Sugar Daddies, running 17 July to 2 August and then again from 25 August to 13 September 2003, taking a break for the youth theatre presentation of a new musical by Ayckbourn and Denis King called Orvin - Champion of Champions from 7 to 23 August 2003. August will also see the third annual SJT Theatre School, a five-day course of lectures and workshops for aspiring theatre practitioners.
