McGann & Harker Open Little Black Book at Riverside

A new translation of Moliere Award-winning French play The Little Black Book (or L'Aide-Memoire) receives its British premiere at London's Riverside Studios. Starring Susannah Harker and Paul McGann, it opens tonight (25 February 2003) for a strictly limited run to 15 March.

In The Little Black Book, confirmed bachelor Jean-Jacques leads a run-of-the-mill existence, until one day he leaves his front door ajar and a strange woman walks into his life. Is she a squatter, a psychopath or a woman from his past?

Author Jean-Claude Carriere has written numerous screenplays including The Unbearable Lightness of Being (based on Milan Kundera's novel) and The Tin Drum (for which he won an Oscar) as well as other scripts for Jean-Luc Goddard, Luis Bunuel and Milos Foreman. For the stage, he's previously adapted the epic nine-hour Mahabharata for Paris-based British director Peter Brook.

Paul McGann is well known for his screen credits such as Our Mutual Friend, Hornblower and, perhaps most famously early in his career, Withnail and I. His stage credits include Sabina and A Lie of the Mind. Susannah Harker's film and television credits include Pride and Prejudice, Waking the Dead and Intimacy while on stage she's been in Uncle Vanya, Tartuffe, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Browning Version.

The new London season of The Little Black Book comes to Riverside care of Coup de Theatre, founded by Marianne Badrichani (who directs) and Solvene Tiffou (who translates), whose aim is to bring French plays, classic or modern, in new translations to British audiences.
