Alan Davies Brings Edinburgh Aunty to Wyndhams

Comedian Alan Davies (pictured) will make his West End stage acting debut in the new year when the Edinburgh Festival hit, Aunty and Me, transfers to Wyndham's Theatre (See The Goss, 20 Aug 2002). The black comedy is due to start performances on 8 January 2003, with a press night planned for 14 January.

In Edinburgh this past summer, Davies co-starred with Marcia Warren as the ailing aunt who drives Davies' eccentric bachelor to distraction by refusing to die in good time. Producers are hoping to have Warren reprise her role, albeit briefly, in the West End. The actress, who won this year's Best Supporting Actress Olivier for Humble Boy, is contracted to appear from 14 February 2002 in the revival of Arsenic and Old Lace at the Strand. The plan is to open Aunty and Me with Warren, then recast in early February.

An award-winning comic, Davies has previously appeared in the West End with his stand-up shows Urban Trauma and Live at the Lyric. His television acting credits include Jonathan Creek, Bob and Rose and A Many Splintered Thing. Aunty and Me marked his stage acting debut.

The two-hander is written by award-winning Canadian playwright Morris Panych and directed by Anna Mackmin. It's presented in the West End by David Johnson, Karl Sydow and Matthew Gale.

Currently at the Wyndham's, Richard Eyre's National Theatre production of Nicholas Wright's Vincent in Brixton finishes its run on 26 October and is followed by the return of the multi award-winning, pre-Broadway The Play What I Wrote from 30 October 2002 to 4 January 2003.
