Three of the West End's longrunners - musicals The Lion King and Blood Brothers as well as stage thriller The Woman in Black - have each announced three-month extensions to their current booking periods, taking them all deep into 2003.
At the Lyceum Theatre, Disney's The Lion King, based on its hit animated film of the same name, has opened a new booking period from 1 April to 29 June 2003. The Broadway stage spectacular, with a score by Tim Rice and Elton John, first opened in the West End in October 1999.
Willy Russell's Liverpudlian musical about twin brothers separated at birth, Blood Brothers, celebrates its 15th West End birthday this month. It first opened on 27 August 1988 at the Albery Theatre before transferring to its current home at the Phoenix in November 1991. It's now booking until 27 September 2003, with Linda Nolan playing the role of Mrs Johnstone.
Stephen Mallatratt's adaptation of Susan Hill's ghost story, The Woman in Black, is in its 14th year in the West End. Originally produced at Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre in December 1987, The Woman in Black has been seen by over two million theatregoers since opening in London in June 1989. The two-hander, currently starring Robert Demeger and Timothy Watson, is now booking at the Fortune Theatre up to 1 March 2003.
