Edward Fox Takes Winslow Boy on Tour, 20 Aug

Edward Fox will lead the cast in a major revival of Terence Rattigan's The Winslow Boy. The new production, which marks the 25th anniversary of the playwright's death, will open from 20 to 31 August 2002 at Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud Theatre before embarking on a two-month tour which will continue to nine further venues until the end of October.

Written at the end of the Second World War but set on the eve of the First one, The Winslow Boy was based on a true story. Ronnie Winslow, a 14-year-old boy, has been expelled from his school for allegedly stealing and cashing a five-shilling postal order. Though they pull together to defend the boy, justice comes at a high personal price for the Winslows in this legal battle that sparks off a national frenzy.

Rattigan's award-winning 1946 play has frequently been adapted for television and film, most recently in David Mamet's 1999 big screen version starring Nigel Hawthorne and Jeremy Northam.

Edward Fox is perhaps best known to TV audiences for Edward and Mrs Simpson, while his film credits include The Importance of Being Earnest, The Bounty, A Passage to India, The Go-Between, A Bridge Too Far, The Day of the Jackal and Oh! What a Lovely War. His recent stage appearances have included The Chiltern Hundreds and A Letter of Resignation in the West End, as well as, on tour, Rattigan's The Browning Version.

Fox is joined in the cast by Simon Ward and Polly Adams. The Winslow Boy is directed by Christopher Morahan with design by Simon Higlett and lighting by Robert Bryan.

Following Guildford, the tour will continue to Malvern, Milton Keynes, TBC, Cambridge, Richmond, Bath, Brighton, Bromley and then closing in Oxford.
