Hurt & Wilton Reprise Dublin Afterplay, 19 SepDate: 2 August 2002
John Hurt (pictured) returns to the West End this autumn to star with Penelope Wilton in Afterplay, a new piece by Irish playwright Brian Friel. As previously tipped in The Goss, the production will transfer to London following its world premiere in March 2002 at Dublin's Gate Theatre.
Afterplay is now confirmed to open for a limited season at the West End's Gielgud Theatre on 19 September 2002 (previews from 10 September). In the one-act two-hander, Hurt and Wilton play Chekhov characters who meet up in a Moscow café years later.
Hurt was last seen in the West End the 1999 production of Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape, which was produced in conjunction with Dublin's Gate Theatre. Hurt is best known for his long-running film career in which his credits include Little Malcolm, The Elephant Man, 1984, White Mischief, The Field, Crime and Punishment, Rob Roy and Love and Death on Long Island.
Wilton has most recently been seen on the London stage in A Kind of Alaska, The Seagull and, last year, in The Little Foxes at the Donmar Warehouse. In addition to her stage career, she has appeared on film and television in Clockwise, Cry Freedom, The Borrowers and Ever Decreasing Circles.
At the Gate this past spring, Afterplay was presented in a double bill - collectively titled "Two Plays After" - with Friel's new adaptation of Chekhov's The Bear, which will not be accompanying it to the West End. Other recent Gate productions to have successfully crossed over to London have included the Ian Holm-led revival of Pinter's The Homecoming and Conor McPherson's Port Authority.
Afterplay is directed by Robin Lefevre and designed by Liz Ascroft, with lighting by Mick Hughes. It is presented in London by Act Productions. Currently resident at the Gielgud is Charlotte Jones' multi award-winning Humble Boy, which now closes on 17 August 2002.
