Stones Jones Brings Irish World Cup to London

A Night in November, the World Cup-set drama by multi award-winning Northern Irish playwright Marie Jones, comes to north London's Tricycle Theatre in highly timely fashion, as Ireland progresses to the second round of the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan. The 1995 from the author of Stones in His Pockets has a limited run at the Tricycle from 10 to 27 July 2002 ahead of an August engagement at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

A Night in November takes a hard and humorous look at the Protestant tradition in Northern Ireland. Dole clerk Kenneth McCallister is tolerant man - he tolerates his marriage, his in-laws and Ulster until, one fateful night in November. As the Republic of Ireland qualifies against Northern Ireland for the World Cup, he finds himself watching not the match, but the sectarian hatred of the crowd. The play follows Kenneth on his rebellious journey as he travels to New York to join the supporters of the Republic's soccer team.

Marty Maguire, who plays Kenneth, is fresh from a run of A Night in November in Los Angeles. The production is directed by Tim Byron Owen and designed by Robert Ballagh, with lighting by Matthew Eagland.

Marie Jones is best-known in the UK for her hit comedy Stones in His Pockets which received its London premiere at the Tricycle before transferring to the West End where it recently celebrated its third birthday. Further productions have been mounted on Broadway and around the world, while a UK tour kicks off from Birmingham later this summer. Jones' other work includes Women on the Verge of HRT.
