New Law Injury Causes More Faustus Cancellations

Actor Jude Law (pictured) suffered another injury on Friday, forcing cancellations of this past weekend's three performances - the Friday and Saturday evenings and Saturday matinee - of Dr Faustus at London's Young Vic.

Law, who plays the title role and has no understudy, last month injured his knee in David Lan's physical production of the Marlowe classic and five performances were cancelled. This time, the accident affected his hand. Although the company attempted to devise a means of performing around the injury, doctors advised Law not to go on. The theatre is hoping that Law will be able to return this Monday evening.

Tickets for the entire limited run of Dr Faustus sold out weeks ahead of the opening night on 18 March (previews from 7 March). The absence following Law's first injury necessitated a week-long extension in order to accommodate disappointed theatregoers. However, the production must close this Saturday 4 May 2002 as the next Young Vic production, the UK premiere of Tony Kushner's Homebody Kabul begins performances next week. As a result, ticket exchanges are no longer possible; theatregoers are being offered full refunds in all cases.

Law plays the title role in Christopher Marlowe's 16th-century morality tale about the man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge, wealth and power. Also in the cast are Richard McCabe, Annette Badland, David Fielder, Bohdan Poraj, Tom Smith and Ofo Uhiara.

Dr Faustus is designed by Richard Hudson, with music by Murray Gold, lighting by Matthew Richardson, sound by Crispian Covell and choreography by Kate Flatt. The play is a co-production between the Young Vic and Natural Nylon Theatre, formed last year by Law with fellow actors Ewan McGregor, Johnny Lee Miller, Sean Pertwee and Law's wife Sadie Frost as a spin-off of their existing film production company.

This is the first Natural Nylon stage project; others planned include an adaptation of Chekhov's Three Sisters, written by Christopher Hampton and directed by Sean Matthias, and The Collector, adapted by Mark Healy from the novel by John Fowles and directed by Mark Clements.

Theatregoers with tickets for this evening's performance of Dr Faustus are advised to call the Young Vic box office on 020 7928 6363 to confirm if the performance will take place.
