Martine Makes Three 2002 Oliviers for My Fair LadyDate: 15 February 2002
Some gasps of shock and cries of outrage, as well as applause, accompanied the announcement of this year's Laurence Olivier Awards as Martine McCutcheon was proclaimed Best Actress in a Musical or Entertainment. The winners of this year's 26th annual Laurence Olivier Awards have now been revealed at a lunchtime awards ceremony, just completed, at the West End's Victoria Palace Theatre. Hosted once again by Clive Anderson and attended by myriad West End stars, the event is followed by a star-studded reception at the London Hilton.
Below, we've detailed the winners, as denoted in bold in all of the 25 awards categories, including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Outstanding Musical Production, Best New Play, Best Comedy and Best Director.
In a notable departure, this year's awards exclude the usual category for Best New Musical, while the remaining Outstanding Musical Production considered just three productions, all of which are revivals - the Broadway transfer of Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate and the two big National musicals, Lerner and Loewe's My Fair Lady and Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific.
In place of that omission, however, were three new categories. Two, for Most Promising Playwright and Most Promising Performer, are aimed at newcomers to London theatre and more specifically - according to awards organisers, the Society of London Theatre - to recognise the contribution of SOLT affiliate members outside the traditional West End. Amongst these are leading London theatres such as the Almeida, Hampstead, Lyric Hammersmith, Young Vic, Tricycle and Royal Court Theatre Upstairs.
