2002 Laurence Olivier Winners Announced Today

2002 Laurence Olivier Winners Announced Today

Date: 15 February 2002

The winners of the 26th annual Laurence Olivier Awards, London's equivalent of the Tonys and the UK's most prestigious stage awards, will be announced today at a star-studded lunchtime ceremony held at the West End’s Victoria Palace Theatre. The full list of winners will be posted here as soon as they’re announced, while a more in-depth analysis of the awards and the acceptance speeches will follow later in the day.

The awards ceremony, sponsored by Hilton hotel group and once again hosted by TV presenter Clive Anderson, will be televised on BBC2 at 7.00pm tomorrow night, Saturday 16 February 2002, in an edited programme that will also contain highlights from the past year in London theatre.

This year’s list of Olivier nominations includes the normal categories – including Best Actress/Actor, Best Actress/Actor in a Musical, Best Director, Best New Play and Best New Comedy – as well as, for the first time, a new field long-running West End productions, the winner of which will have been decided by audiences. There was one glaring omission in this year’s nominations too – the category of Best New Musicals was dropped as, apparently, the judges felt there weren’t enough new musical productions of suitable quality for consideration.
