Kureishi's Sleep with Me Premieres 22 April
Date: 17 February 1999

The world premiere of Hanif Kureishi's new play, Sleep with Me, will open at the National's Cottesloe Theatre on 22 April (following previews from 16 April).

Sleep with Me is Kureishi's first new play for 15 years. Best known now as a screenwriter and novelist, Kureishi's screenplays include My Beautiful Laundrette, Sammy and Rosie Get Laid and London Kills Me; his novels include The Buddha of Suburbia which won the Whitbread Prize for Best First Novel and was dramatised by the BBC, and Intimacy which has just been published in paperback. Formerly, Kureishi was writer in residence at the Royal Court.

Sleep with Me is a fast-moving, tragi-comic satire exposing the emotionally and sexually chaotic lives of a group of friends during the course of a summer weekend in the country. The cast is Kacey Ainsworth, Sean Chapman, Penny Downie, Michelle Gomez, Jonathan Hyde, Adrian Lukis, Sian Thomas and Peter Wright.

Sleep with Me is directed by Anthony Page, whose current production of The Forest is playing in the Lyttelton, with design by Tim Hatley and lighting by Howard Harrison.

Other RNT productions this spring include the UK premiere and only British performances of The Geometry of Miracles, the latest devised ensemble work from Robert Lepage and Ex Machina, which runs 14 to 24 April in the Lyttelton; and a revival of Noel Coward's Private Lives, directed by Philip Franks and also playing in the Lyttelton from 13 May (previews from 7 May).
