Hall's Cooking with Elvis Opens at Whitehall
Date: 2 February 2000

Lee Hall's acclaimed comic drama, Cooking with Elvis, opens at the Whitehall Theatre next month, making it the fourth Hall production to transfer to the capital this year. The play, which was a hit at last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, opens on 14 March 2000, with previews from 6 March.

Hall's adaptation of his own acclaimed radio play, Spoonface Steinberg, just completed a three-week run at the New Ambassadors. His adaptation of Goldoni's The Servant of Two Masters, produced by the RSC, opened in Stratford in December and transfers to the Young Vic next month, and his adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children, produced by Shared Experience, opens at the New Ambassadors in March. His previous theatre credits include the much lauded Mr Puntila and His Man Matti, another Brecht adaptation that was co-produced by the Right Size and the Almeida, which was also an Edinburgh hit and went on to a nationwide tour and yet another run in the West End.

In Cooking with Elvis, directed by Max Roberts, a 14-year-old girl becomes obsessed with food while her mother goes on the pull for a toyboy after a car accident has reduced her husband, a part-time Elvis impersonator, to a vegetative state. Enter an unlikely charmer called Stewart to shake up the dysfunctional family further.
