Rocky Horror Warps into West End, 14 April
Date: 23 March 1999
The Silver Jubilee production of stage and film classic, The Rocky Horror Show comes to the West End next month. The show, starring Australian soap and pop star Jason Donovan, opens at the Victoria Palace on 14 April 1999 (previews from 12 April) for a limited eight-week season.
Author Richard O'Brien first unleashed the rock musical at the Royal Court's Theatre Upstairs in 1973. Last year, a brand new touring production, directed by Christopher Malcolm, was mounted to celebrate the show's 25th anniversary. The production opened 24 March 1998 in Birmingham and has been touring ever since.
The story opens with two all-American high school sweethearts, Janet Weiss and Brad Majors, on a stormy night in a forest. When their car breaks down, they hope to find help at the castle whose light they see shining in the distance. But when they knock on the castle's door, they are ushered into a world of unexpected - and irresistible - perversion. There they meet a gathering of bizarre characters: Frank 'n' Furter, a pouting sex-mad transvestite who comes form the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania; fellow alien Columbia; the dastardly Riff Raff and his sister Magenta.
The musical includes 18 classic songs, including 'Time Warp', 'Sweet Transvestite', 'Dammit Janet', 'Going Home' and 'Touch A Touch Me'. The show is also renowned for its unruly audience participation.
Jason Donovan plays Frank 'n' Furter. Donovan is well-known for his role in Australian soap opera Neighbours and for his pop songs in the early 90s. On stage, he starred in the recent West End revival of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
