Nicky Silver Play for UK Debut
Date: 28 December 1999

Hot on the heels of Donald Marguelis, whose Collected Stories is currently running in the West End at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket in the first London production of any of his plays, another stalwart of the off-Broadway scene is to make his London debut: Nicky Silver is to see his 1998 play The Maiden's Prayer open early in the New Year at West London's small but influential Bush Theatre .

The Maiden's Prayer was originally produced at New York's Vineyard Theatre in February 1998, a theatre that had previously produced his plays Pterodactyls in 1993 and Raised in Captivity in 1995, and also subsequently staged Silver's The Eros Trilogy, starring Betty Buckley, at the beginning of 1999. Silver's other plays include The Food Chain (seen in a commercial run at the Westside Theatre) and Fit to be Tied, seen at Playwright's Horizons.

The Maiden's Prayer is described as a funny, wisecracking, touching yet unsentimental loook at love in all its permutations in contemporary New York. In the play, Paul loves Taylor, Taylor loves Cynthia, Libby can't stop loving Taylor, and Andrew loves sex and cable TV. All come together at the wedding of Taylor and Cynthia.

The UK production, which opens on January 14 following previews from January 12, runs to February 5, and is directed by Sarah Esdaile, who was worked for both the RSC and at Shakespeare's Globe. The cast is Eric Loren, Madeleine Potter, Adrian Rawlins, Michael Simkins and Debora Weston.
