Porgy & Bess Plays One Week Only at RFH Date: 22 July 1999
The New York production Porgy and Bess arrives at London's Royal Festival Hall for eight performances only on 13 September 1999 as part of a worldwide tour.
The 1935 musical drama by George and Ira Gershwin is based on a 1925 novel written by Southerner DuBose Heyward in response to a newspaper account of a legless beggar. The story of two lovers is set in the segregated American community of Charleston in the 1920s. The score includes such classics as 'Summertime', 'It Ain't Necessarily So', 'I Loves You Porgy' and 'I Got Plenty of Nuttin''.
Brian Gibson and Samuel Stevenson, who share the role of Porgy, and Elizabeth Graham and La Rose Saxon, who share the role of Bess. They are joined by Stephen B Finch as Crown, Anne Fridal as Serena, Duane Moody as Sportin' Life and Kim Sylvian as Maria.
Porgy and Bess is directed by Will Roberson, with musical direction by Stefan Kozinski, choreography by Kevin Jeff, design by James Fouchard, lighting by John McLain, costumes by Candace Donnelly and staging by Elizabeth Graham.
One of the UK's most acclaimed productions of Porgy and Bess was mounted by Trevor Nunn as part of the 1986 Glyndebourne Festival. This will be the first fully staged production in the capital since 1992.
