Bristol Awarded £93m for Arts Centre Date: 29 September 1997
Bristol has obtained the go-ahead from the Arts Council to build a £93m performing arts complex on the city's docks. The Harbourside Centre, which will rival London's South Bank Centre in scale, will feature a 2,300 seat concert hall, a 450-seat auditorium and a smaller rehearsal hall. Three orchestras and two dance companies have been granted residencies at the centre, scheduled to open in 2002. The Arts Council award, which includes £41m of lottery funding, is likely to be the last for a major new performing arts site because of an expected change in emphasis to the British film industry and smaller projects.
