“Something in the Eyre” at Standard Drama Awards Date: 28 November 1997
The National Theatre claimed a near full-sweep of the 42nd annual Evening Standard Drama Awards held today. Sir Richard Eyre took two personal awards - best director for The Invention of Love and King Lear - and a Special Award in recognition of his 10 years leadership of the National which ended last month. Other awards included: Best Play, Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love; Best Actor, Ian Holm in King Lear; Best Actress, Eileen Atkins in A Delicate Balance; Best Comedy, Patrick Marber's Closer; Best Musical, Lady in the Dark; and Most Promising Playwright, Conor McPherson for The Weir.
