Cast Announced for Donmar's Into the Woods

Date: 7 October 1998

The Donmar Warehouse's winter musical, a new production of Sondheim and Lapine's Into the Woods, will open 16 November 1998, with previews from 6 November, and will run until 14 February 1999.

The 18-strong cast, confirmed this week, is: Michelle Blair, Clare Burt, John Cater, Louise Davidson, Ceri Ann Gregory, Michael N Harbour, Nick Holder, Samantha Lavender, Dilys Laye, Christopher Pizzey, Matthew Rawle, Sheila Reid, Jenna Russell, Caroline Sheen, Sheridan Smith, Sophie Thompson, Tony Timberlake and Zoe Walsham.

Into the Woods - with book by James Lapine, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim - is a reworking of classic children's fairy tales which interweaves several comic plots and exposes their nightmarish flipsides. The score includes 'Children Will Listen', 'Giants in the Sky' and 'No One is Alone'.

The Donmar production is directed by the theatre's associate director John Crowley and co-directed and choreographed by Jonathan Butterell, with design by the award-winning Bob Crowley, lighting by Paul Byant and sound by John A Leonard. Original orchestrations are by Jonathon Tunick and musical direction and orchestrations by Mark Warman.
