Judges Wanted for Barclays Theatre Awards
Date: 4 June 1998

The Barclays Theatre Awards, presented annually by the Theatrical Management Association (TMA), are looking for up to 100 theatregoers throughout the country to become judges on the Regional Judging Panel for the 1999 Awards. Application forms will be circulated in up to 200 theatres all over the UK later this month with a closing date of 10 July 1998 and will be available via a public request telephone line (see below).

Free theatre tickets for a whole year will be made available to each of the 100 successful applicants. Panellists will assess productions at their local theatres throughout the judging year - 1 September 1998 to 31 August 1999 - and submit their regular reports to the central Awards office in London. A list of nominees will be drawn up in September - the 13 categories will include familiar awards such as Best Actor and Best Actress as well as more unique ones such as Best Show for Children and Young People and Most Welcoming Theatre. Productions at over 160 theatres throughout the UK are eligible for the Awards

The Barclays Theatre Awards are the only UK-wide Awards committed to celebrating the very best in regional theatre. Last year's winners toasted some of the rich talent in theatres nationwide, including Ben Elton for his play Popcorn, which opened first in Yorkshire before transferring to the West End, and Janet McTeer as Best Actress in A Doll's House.

The Barclays Theatre Awards 1998 ceremony will be held in Norwich on 25 October. The Awards shortlist will be announced in mid-September.

All theatregoers are welcome to apply for 1999 judging - the main criterion is a commitment to see as many shows as possible in the course of the judging year. Application forms are available by calling +44-171-557-6777.
