Hillsborough Play Opens at RNT Tonight
Date: 11 November 1998

Jonathan Harvey's new play Guiding Star opens tonight at the National's Cottesloe Theatre, following its world premiere in September at the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool. Guiding Star is a co-production between the Everyman and the RNT.

On 15 April 1989, Terry Fitzgibbon and his two sons survived the disaster at Hillsborough in which nearly a hundred fans were crushed during a Liverpool football match. Nine years later, Terry is still haunted by survivor's guilt and his struggle to come to terms with the tragedy that shook a city is tearing his family apart.

Colin Tierney, who stars as Terry, was last seen at the National as Cassio in Sam Mendes' production of Othello. Previous stage work includes The Machine Wreckers (at the National), Ivanov (Almeida), Henry IV (RSC) and Sienna Red (Peter Hall Company).

Tierney is joined by Jake Abraham, Samantha Lavelle, Elaine Lordan, Tina Malone, Kieran O'Brien, Robert Perkins, Carl Rice and Tracy Wilkinson.

Guiding Star is directed by Gemma Bodinetz whose previous work includes Chimps and Paper Husband (Hampstead Theatre), Caravan (Bush) and Dead Funny (national tour). Design is by Bruce Macadie, lighting by Tina MacHugh and music by Richard Harvey.
