Marceau Mimes into West End in May
Date: 16 April 1998
Mime legend Marcel Marceau will be performing in London for a limited five week season from Friday 15 May (previews from 11 May) at the Old Vic Theatre. Marceau will be performing two shows - his new production The Bowler Hat and classic Bip - in repertory. Both were presented earlier this year in a seven week, sell-out season at the Espace Pierre Cardin in Paris.
The Bowler Hat is a comic fantasy and love story set in London between both world wars. Written and directed by Marceau, it is a tribute to Charlie Chaplin and his character The Tramp.
Marceau, one of France's best known international artists, has been performing for 50 years. He created his most famous character, Bip, a romantic mischief-maker, in 1947. The Bowler Hat is a product of the Nouvelle Compagnie de Mimodrame Marcel Marceau, a company of thirteen mime artists set up in 1992. It is the company's third production.
The Bowler Hat will run Tuesday to Saturday each week with Bip performed on Sundays.
