Tara Fitzgerald Stars as Antigone at Old Vic
Date: 23 July 1999

British film actress Tara Fitzgerald will star in Sophocles' Antigone this autumn. The new adaptation, directed by former Cheek by Jowler Declan Donnellan, will open at the Old Vic on 11 October 1999 (previews from 1 October).

Fitzgerald is well known on television and film where her credits include Hear My Song, Brassed Off and Sirens. Her stage appearances include Our Song at the Apollo and the Almeida production of Hamlet at the Hackney Empire where she starred as Ophelia opposite Ralph Fiennes.

In the classic Greek tragedy, the laws of the gods and the laws of humans are pitted against one another. War has destroyed Antigone's world - her brothers lie dead on the battlefield while Creon her uncle has seized the throne. Alone, she stands against Creon's tyranny, risking her life to bury her allegedly traitorous brother.

Declan Donnellan's recent productions include Much Ado About Nothing, the Russian-version production of The Winter's Tale and Noel Coward's Hay Fever, currently starring Geraldine McEwan at the Savoy. Further casting details for Antigone are yet to be confirmed.

Currently in rehearsal at the Old Vic is Keith Waterhouse's Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, starring Peter O'Toole and directed by Ned Sherrin. It opens 4 August and continues until 25 September.
