British Playwrights Honoured by French Date: 12 September 1997
Three of Britain's leading playwrights were honoured yesterday by the French government. In a ceremony held at the French embassy in London, Sir Tom Stoppard, David Hare and Christopher Hampton were each awarded the insignia of Officier des Arts et Lettres for contributions to Anglo-French culture. The ceremony precedes the opening of the French Theatre season in London, the largest celebration of French culture ever held in the UK. The season opens on 30 September at the National Theatre where the Comedie Francaise, with its production of Les Fausses Confidences, will perform in Britain for the first time in 24 years.
