ROH Calls Crisis Meeting as Redundancies Loom Date: 30 October 1997
The Royal Opera House has called an emergency board meeting today, according to The Guardian. Worsening financial turmoil has resulted in 230 casual staff not being paid for up to three months, while others have had paycheques bounce. Further redundances are now firmly on the cards - more than 300 were made earlier this year - and there is talk of severely reducing or even cancelling the second half of this season, the first away from its Covent Garden home which is undergoing refurbishment. Much of the current crisis is blamed on cash flow concerns compounded by the disastrous opening season of the Royal Ballet at temporary home Labatt's Apollo in Hammersmith where full-price ticket sales reached only 30 percent of the 3,000 seat capacity. These and other problems continue to be scrutinised as part of the Parliamentary select committee into the investigation of the running of the House which resumes this week.
