Greenwich Theatre Re-opens with Festival

Date: 12 June 1998

The cash-strapped Greenwich Theatre, closed since March following the withdrawal of its £191,000 grant from the Arts Council, will re-open next month to host an Irish production as part of the annual Greenwich and Docklands International Festival.

The revival of Lennox Robinson's 1916 play The Whiteheaded Boy, performed by Dublin-based 'Barabbas ...the company', will run from 14 to 18 July 1998. The production comes to Greenwich as part of the Festival's continuing series of partnerships with other worldwide cities located on waterfronts - this year's Waterfront City is Dublin.

Barabbas director Gerard Stembridge deconstructs and rejigs The Whiteheaded Boy; the cast swap roles, deliver the stage directions as well as the dialogue and play all twelve parts between four actors.

Other theatrical offerings in the week long festival (10 - 19 July) include: Manes by Spanish theatre company La Fura dels Baus in their first visit to London in a decade; a site-specific production of Paul Sirett's new play Jamaica House performed by the Theatre Royal, Stratford East in an East End tower block; and a promenade performance of the specially commissioned children's production Millworks by Theatre-rites.

The festival programme will also feature street theatre, visual art, classical music, open-air concerts and dance events as well as gala celebrations for both opening and closing nights.

Contact the festival box office on +44-181-853-4444 or visit its website for further information.
