New musical aims to help new mothers in south London

A new musical will premiere next month with the intention of helping new mothers "combat feelings of loneliness, isolation and depression often experienced in the stages of early parenthood."

The Good Enough Mums Club has received funding as part of a Design Council initiative to improve child and parent healthcare in the London boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth.

Attendees will be encouraged to use performances of the show as "an instigator to inspire and empower parents to create their own informal support networks", called Good Enough Mums Clubs.

"In creating this musical we wanted to share our experiences of motherhood with other mothers," said the show's creator Emily Beecher, who swapped her career as a producer for a new life as a mum.

"It is our desire to communicate the message of hope and acceptance we have found, born out of some of the darkest experiences of early motherhood."

Beecher's co-creator is Sally Samad, and the show features music composed by Chris Passey and Amy Carroll.

There will be several performances of the musical in March to an invited audience of parents, healthcare practitioners and press, followed by a Q&A to discuss the development of the project.

According to press material, "From peeing on sticks to drooping tits, The Good Enough Mums Club shares the love and dispels the myths of motherhood."

The Good Enough Mums Club premieres on 6 and 7 March 2014 at The Three Stags pub in Kennington.
