Warchus falls out of love with Shakespeare musical?

The forthcoming stage adaptation of Oscar-winning film Shakespeare in Love has been postponed after director Matthew Warchus dropped out due to creative differences, according to the Daily Mail.

Tom Stoppard, who co-wrote the 1998 film with Marc Norman, was originally going to re-write it for the stage but he also withdrew, leading producers Thomas Schumacher and Sonia Friedman to contract Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall.

A workshop production took place with various actors and director Warchus (Ghost, Matilda), but the Mail‘s Baz Bamigboye reports that “sharp words were exchanged” and Warchus has now left the production.

Shakespeare in Love now starts a new search for a director, with hopes for a possible opening in 2013 or 2014.
