Simon Ward Completes West End Pygmalion Cast

Simon Ward completes the cast of the upcoming West End revival of George Bernard Shaw’s classic Pygmalion, which opens at the West End’s Garrick Theatre on 25 May 2011 (previews from 12 May).

Ward, who plays Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle’s dustman father Alfred Doolittle, joins a company led, as already reported, by Rupert Everett as Professor Henry Higgins and Kara Tointon as Eliza, and also features Diana Rigg as Mrs Higgins and Peter Eyre as Colonel Pickering. They’re joined by Peter Sandys Clarke (as Freddy Eynsford Hill), Marty Cruickshank and Roberta Taylor (Mrs Pearce).

Simon Ward’s recent theatre credits include The Madness Of King George III, The Winslow Boy, A Touch of Danger and An Ideal Husband, while his many TV credits include Judge John Deed, The Tudors and Young Winston.

George Bernard Shaw‘s 1901 play was famously the basis for Lerner and Loewe’s 1956 Broadway musical My Fair Lady. Philip Prowse’s revival originally ran from 9 July to 27 August 2010 at Chichester Festival, where the cast was led by Everett and Honeysuckle Weeks as flower-girl turned duchess, Eliza.

The West End transfer of the Chichester Festival Theatre production is presented by Nica Burns and Max Weitzenhoffer for Nimax Theatres, Duncan C Weldon & Paul Elliot in association Carole Winter and Michael Edwards for MJE Productions and the Theatre Royal Haymarket Company.
