Opening: Burnt, Miracle, Lughnasa, Over, Victory
Amongst the major openings in London this week are:
Adapted from the Russian film by Peter Flannery and directed by Howard Davies, it examines the horrifying reach of Stalin’s rule through the eyes of Colonel Kotov, a decorated hero of the Russian Revolution, and runs in rep until 21 April.
ALSO ON TUESDAY, Hallelujah, a new comedy by Jane Brodie, premieres at Theatre 503. The play was commissioned, written and rehearsed in under 2 months as part of 503’s Rapid Write programme, and runs until 28 March.
OPENING WEDNESDAY, 4 March 2009 (previews from 27 February), the Royal Court Young Writers Festival continues Upstairs with A Miracle by Molly Davies, featuring Sorcha Cusack, Gerard Horan, Kate O’Flynn and Russell Tovey. Until 21 March.
OPENING THURSDAY, 5 March 2009 (previews from 26 February), Andrea Corr, Niamh Cusack, Michelle Fairley, Susan Lynch and Simone Kirby head the cast in Anna Mackmin’s revival of Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa at the Old Vic (See News, 22 Oct 2008).
Set in 1930s rural Ireland, Dancing at Lughnasa, which won a host of awards when it premiered in 1990, paints a touching portrait of the loves and losses of the five unmarried Mundy sisters. Until 9 May.

ALSO ON THURSDAY, the Olivier Award-winning Theatre Royal Stratford East production of Pied Piper – billed as “a hip-hop dance revolution” – is revived at the Barbican Theatre for a limited run to 14 March.
OPENING FRIDAY, 6 March 2009 (previews from 25 February) Mark Ravenhill’s new play Over There opens at the Royal Court Downstairs, directed by the author and Ramin Gray, and starring Harry and Luke Treadaway. It centres on estranged twin brothers trying to find each other in post-wall Berlin, and runs as part of the Royal Court’s Off the Wall season of plays about Germany. Until 21 March.
ALSO ON FRIDAY, Geraldine James and Matthew Kelly head the cast in a revival of Howard Barker’s Victory – Choices in Reaction at the Arcola Theatre (See News, 21 Jan 2009), where it runs until 4 April.
