Ian McKellen Waits Some More for Godot???

Theatregoers may soon have a second chance to see Ian McKellen as Estragon in Sean Mathias’ production of Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, which finished its extended season at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in August. According to today’s Daily Mail, the revival may be revived at the Haymarket in the new year after the current – less critically well received – adaptation of Breakfast at Tiffany’s starring Anna Friel finishes its run.

However, if Godot does return it will be without McKellen’s original Patrick Stewart, who has other commitments. Columnist Baz Bamigboye says that after the show’s success at the Haymarket, it was originally aiming to transfer directly to the Gielgud Theatre, with Antony Sher taking over as Vladimir. But Sher is also no longer available as he’s heading to Sheffield to lead An Enemy of the People, Daniel Evans’ first production as artistic director at the Crucible, where that opens in February (See News, 23 Sep 2009).
