Chile's leading itinerant theatre company, Tryo Teatro Banda recount the life and adventures of the Spanish renaissance soldier-poet Alonso de Ercilla, who travelled from Philip II's court in Madrid to the New World. Forged in the heat of battle, his first-hand account of the Conquest of Chile and the heroism of the destroyed indigenous tribes is one of the most celebrated literary works of the Spanish Golden Age. Renowned for their comic verve and Commedia Dell'Arte story-telling, Tryo's four actor-musicians play more than fifteen instruments in this playfully subversive interpretation of De Ercilla's epic poem La Araucaniad.
La Araucana is performed in Spanish with English surtitles. Running time: 1hr 10mins/no interval. Age guidance: 12+
