The outwardly respectable clerk is married to Monica, a rich, doting wife many years his senior but while Edward waits amicably for her to die to claim her money, he fears his inheritance is under threat when there is talk of changing her will. Soon Edward takes matters into his own hands and decides to hasten her end and make it look like an accident but he has misjudged the older woman and discovers an unpleasant surprise in her will. Undaunted, Edward soon succeeds in marrying wealthy widow Freda Jefferies but much to Edward's frustration she has no intention of sharing her wealth which leaves him with a new dilemma over whether to commit another murder and how best to ensure the money he believes he deserves comes to him. When another rich woman arrives he must make another decision about whether there should be a new victim for his murderous tactics.
