Author Lee Hall’s The Pitmen Painters - which has won the Evening Standard and been nominated for the Whatsonstage.com Award for Best New Play - returns to the National Theatre this week for an extended run in the NT Lyttelton. This follows its sell-out 2008 season in the smaller NT Cottesloe and world premiere at the Live Theatre, Newcastle, where Hall has worked regularly for many years. Hall is best known as the author, on screen and stage, of the award-laden Billy Elliot. After its success in London and Australia, the musical received its Broadway premiere – to critical acclaim – this past November. Hall’s other stage credits include Cooking With Elvis and Spoonface Steinberg.
