The UK and Ireland tour of Matilda, which opens this week in Leicester, has announced that it will extend to six further venues in 2019.

The piece, created by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly and produced by the RSC, based on Roald Dahl's novel of the same name, will continue its run in the West End while also going out on tour. It features numbers including "When I Grow Up", "Revolting Children" and "Naughty".

The show debuted at the RSC Swan Theatre in Stratford in 2010, before transferring to the West End in November 2011. It went on to win seven Olivier Awards – setting a new record (only since beaten by Harry Potter), and also won five Tony Awards in 2013.

Alongside previously announced venues in the tour are new runs at Theatre Royal Plymouth, the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, Edinburgh Playhouse, Bristol Hippodrome, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton and Norwich Theatre Royal next year.

The production has also announced a new RSC education initiative called Change My Story, committed to championing relationships between school communities and theatres. The programme will run throughout the UK tour and allow selected state schools to work with RSC artists in residence to stage and perform a special 45 minute edit of Matilda as their school play.

The Matilda UK tour opens at the Curve, Leicester on 15 March.
