Chickenshed Establishes Company in Kensington & Chelsea

Children from ages 11-16 will have the opportunity to participate in Youth Theatre workshops in Chickenshed’s new Inclusive Theatre Company, opening today in Kensington and Chelsea.

The company will open for children aged 7-11 years on 1 November 2011, as well as workshops for children aged 5-7 years and adults aged 16+ starting early next year.

Chickenshed, a north London-based “inclusive” theatre company, emphasizes theatre open to people of all backgrounds and abilities, with workshops aimed to encourage individual and group creativity.

The company began in 1974 when Jo Collins, a musician and director, and Mary Ward, a teacher and director, opened a small theatre company in a chicken shed with a shared idea that still holds the company together today.

Chickenshed produces musicals and plays performed by children and adults of all ages and backgrounds with no auditions, relying on individual performance during weekly workshops.

Membership subscriptions at the Kensington and Chelsea company are £60 per term, with reduced rates for siblings and families on low incomes and free for families in receipt of benefits. Membership forms are available on Chickenshed’s website or by telephone.

The new company will be located at Chelsea Academy, Lots Road, London SW10 0AB.
