Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards Launch Party – Last Friday (5 December) saw the announcement of the nominees in this year’s Theatregoers’ Choice Awards, held at the Hippodrome and attended by a host of leading industry figures. This film features interviews with hosts Graham Norton, Michael Ball and Mel Giedroyc, alongside a host of guests and clips from the show. Whoopi Goldberg announces Sister Act – The Musical – American comedy actress Whoopi Goldberg appeared on a US talk show recently to announce the launch of Sister Act – The Musical (which she is co-producing) in the West End. She also let slip news of possible Broadway dates shortly before being hailed by a group of singing nuns in the audience. All in a day’s work…
Show Trailer – Priscilla – For a sneak peak of the musical version of Priscilla – Queen of the Desert, which is heading to the Palace Theatre early next year (See News, 16 Sep 2008), we tracked down this trailer which was released in conjunction with the show’s Australian premiere in 2006. It includes lengthy clips from the show as well as a bus load of hit songs.
Shane Warne the Musical?! – Another antipodean export that could be heading for these shores in the near future is a biographical musical of legendary Aussie spin bowler (and salacious text messager) Shane Warne. Not the most obvious subject for a musical you might say, but here the wonderfully named Eddie Perfect, who created the show and also stars in the title role, tells us it’s “everything you could want and more from a musical”. We’ll wait and see on that one.
Amazonia – Currently showing at the Young Vic, Amazonia is the culmination of a 15-month series of events celebrating the Brazilian landscape and culture. Here a large selection of audience members give their resounding endorsements of the show, contrasting with its decidedly frosty critical reception.
Show Trailer – Wig Out! – Another Christmas show which got a bit of a critical mauling recently was Tarrell Alvin McCraney’s Wig Out! at the Royal Court (See Review Round-Up, 2 Dec 2008). For the show, the Downstairs auditorium has been transformed by designer Ultz into the ‘House of Light’, a “hyper-glamorous and uber-competitive” drag queen refuge where the residents prepare for a catwalk showdown.
