It’s hard to imagine a comedian who doesn’t speak. But then again it is hard to imagine the weird and wonderful world of The Boy With Tape On His Face.

After two successful years at Edinburgh, the Boy, who does the whole show with a wide piece of black gaffa tape across his face, has become a word-of-mouth success. So much so, that a second show sold out without being added to Lowry’s brochure list.

For those who might have seen him on TV to a lukewarm response, I’d urge you to try the live show. There is an announcement at the start that this is an interactive show in which you are invited to play along. If you really hate audience participation then this definitely isn’t the show for you. That said, at no point does the Boy try to make anyone into a fool.

There is something very innocent and fantastical about the act that brings out the playful child in everyone. And all the people he invites on stage leave with a genuine smile on their face, some in a fit of uncontrollable giggles.

Silent throughout, the Boy uses mime, magic, a bunch of silly props, bursts of music, audience members and unbelievably expressive eyes to create a series of sketches which are genius in their apparent simplicity. It is a feel good show for all ages. 

To try to explain why it’s so funny is like asking why there’s a singing pedal bin on stage? For some things there are no words.
