It’s not panto but it is unquestionably one of Theatreland’s Christmas traditions. The annual Theatre Quiz at the National – in which two teams of performers compete with each other as well as the audience – takes place at 6.00pm this Friday 19 December 2008 in the NT Olivier. Now in its 25th year, up until 2001 the quiz was a battle between the National and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Since the RSC withdrew from its permanent London residency at the Barbican Centre in mid-2002, the National has fielded two in-house teams.
This year’s is an Anglo-American competition – including Broadway questions – with the Chicago-based Steppenwolf company of August: Osage County squaring up against the cast of War Horse. And we hear that the latter may be bringing with them a four-legged mascot… Broadcaster Emma Freud returns as quiz mistress and Gethsemane’s Adam James will be in the hot seat as the scorer. Tickets are £3.50. Call the NT box office on 020 7452 3000 to book.
