For one night only, the Royal Ballet have produced Step by Step to showcase their 70 year history, and to open the Invitation To The Ballet exhibition at the Lowry.
Introduced by Dame Monica Mason, the Director of the Royal Ballet, the show consists of fourteen short dances from various ballets; dating from the thirties, to the world première of a new piece called Reverie.
Using principal dancers from both the Royal Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, plus eight students from the Royal Ballet School, the entire show is, as would be expected, excellently executed.
Ranging from the classical – a pas de deux from The Nutcracker – to the modern – a pas de deux from Chroma – the evening showcases the huge variety of styles that the company have produced over the years. The Clog Dance
from La Fille mal gardee raised laughter from the audience as did the stunning Alaskan Rag from Elite Syncopations.
There is only one problem with evenings like this – they leave you wanting to see more!
