Following the recent spate of screen-to-stage musicals, it looks like hit alt-rock show Spring Awakening could be set to reverse the trend.
McG is something of a surprise candidate for the project, with no musicals among his previous credits – which include Charlie’s Angels and the forthcoming Terminator Salvation. And there is currently no studio attached to the project, though Empire reports that “McG may bypass major studios in order to retain the Tony-winning musical’s edgier qualities”.
Spring Awakening is currently enjoying its West End premiere at the Novello theatre (See 1st Night Photos, 27 Mar 2009), starring a young cast of British newcomers including Aneurin Barnard, Iwan Rheon, Charlotte Wakefield and Lucy Barker.
