JB Priestley’s 1938 drawing-room comedy When We Are Married is gearing up for a return to the West End this autumn in a new production, directed by Christopher Luscombe and starring Roy Hudd and Rosemary Ashe. It’s last West End outing was at the Whitehall Theatre (now Trafalgar Studios) in 1985, though there have been more recent revivals at Chichester Festival in 1996 and West Yorkshire Playhouse last year. The play centres on three middle-class couples who gather to celebrate their silver wedding anniversaries, with a drunken photographer (played by Hudd) on hand to impart his own pearls of wisdom.
