Craig Revel Horwood’s current actor-musician touring production of Chess is rumoured to be heading for the West End after it concludes its tour in Canada later this year. Publicity material for the Toronto season states the run is “just prior to its West End debut” – which wouldn’t come as a surprise considering Revel Horwood’s track record. Speaking at the 2011 Whatsonstage.com Awards – where the musical scooped the Award for Best Regional Production – both Revel Horwood and the show’s producer Michael Harrison were bullish about the production’s West End prospects, looking to open “the week beginning 28 November”. The 1986 musical, with book and lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Abba’s Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, centres on two World Chess Championship players in a romantic triangle with the woman who manages one and falls in love with the other.
