Jerry Springer aside, Nicholas Hytner’s reign at the National Theatre isn’t known for its musical output. But we hear that the NT will be getting back into the musical theatre game later this year, by presenting Fela!, the current Broadway musical that celebrates Afrobeat musician and political activist Fela Kuti. Broadway stars Sahr Ngaujah and Kevin Mambo, who share the title role, are expected to reprise their performances in London, with Spring Awakening’s Bill T Jones directing and choreographing again. Fela!, which opened in November 2009 at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre where it continues an open-ended run, is expected to open at the National’s Olivier in November 2010.
