The Royal Shakespeare Company, which premiered the Roald Dahl musical in Stratford-upon-Avon last summer and produced its West End run at the Cambridge Theatre, announced intentions for a Broadway transfer back in February and reportedly began preliminary auditions in March.
The show has been an outstanding success, scooping seven Olivier awards and four Whatsonstage.com Awards, including Best New Musical. Rumours of “Americanising” Matilda and other characters for the US transfer have been fiercely resisted by the RSC.
Adapted from Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel, Matilda The Musical has a book by the playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by comedian Tim Minchin, and direction by Matthew Warchus. Casting for the Broadway transfer is still to be announced.
